Tallahassee Numismatic Club News October 2015

We had a very good meeting this month and discussed on various club activities.

Mr. Ray Herz from Jacksonville, FL presented on "AU/BU: The Great Divide" - A profusely illustrated study of six classic series from the early 20^th century in grades from MS-68 to AU-50. It was informative and all the members enjoyed it. Thanks Mr. Ray. 

Members from Thomasville Club also attended our meeting. Mr. Bill and Peter updated us about the their Coin Show in November.

We are continuing with our Multi-Club activity by attending Thomasville Coin Club meetings.

Few members from our club attended the FUN show and had a very good experience. They had the opportunity to view some excellent exhibits. There were educational stalls from US Mint, US Bureau and Engraving. 

Members also attended FUN Club get together meeting. And had the opportunity to meet and greet ANA and FUN Presidents and members from other clubs.

Annual Spring One Day Coin Show - 2014

The Tallahassee Numismatic Club will be hosting their Annual Spring One Day Coin Show @ 1400 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303 on May 10^th, 2014 Saturday. This meet is a unique opportunity to congregate and trade materials.

The show will be open to the public from 9:00 am until 5 pm. There is no admission charge and parking is free. Dealers from the surrounding states will be on hand to buy, sell and trade coins, currency and other numismatic items.

Raffle tickets will be sold and there will be hourly drawings. Silent auction is our other attraction. Free appraisals and identifications will be available on site as time permits.

There will be Gold and Silver Coins, Gift Certificates ($90 value) from Keynotes Piano Studio Tallahassee, FL, Show Souvenirs (ANACS Slabbed Coins) and other attractive numismatic items in Raffle and Silent Auction.

ANACS will be there to grade your coins.

Tallahassee Numismatic Club at FUN Summer - 2013, Orlando

Tallahassee Numismatic Club attended FUN Member club "Get Together & Discussion" meet on July 12th 2013. We really enjoyed meeting other club members and got to know about their activities. Thanks to FUN President Tony Swicer for the invitation.We enjoyed their food & raffle.

At the show we met several dealers who were keen to know about our next show. Several of them suggested that we should continue our One Day Show like last year.   Based on their suggestions here is the possible date for our One Day Show this year, which is on August 24th, 2013.  Please attend our Coin Show and encourage coin collecting.

First Annual Coin Show April 2013 Photos

First Annual Coin Show April 26-27, 2013

The Tallahassee Numismatic Club will be hosting their First Annual 2013 coin Show on April 26 - 27th, 2013. The event will be held at The Marzuk Shrine Temple, which is located at 1805 North Monroe Street in Tallahassee, Florida (http://marzuqshrine.org).

The show will be open to the public from 10:00 am until 7:00 pm Friday and 9:00 am until 5:00 pm Saturday. Raffle tickets will be sold and there will be hourly drawings. Apart from that we will be having a Silent Auction and an exhibit display at the show. There is no admission charge and parking is free.

40+ dealers from Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee and Louisiana will be on hand to buy, sell and trade coins, currency and other numismatic items. Free appraisals and identifications will be available on site as time permits.

First One Day Swap/Trade Meet on July 28th 2012

A One Day Swap Meet is being planned at Tallahasssee. This is will be our first of many upcoming Coin Show in Tallahassee. It is an attempt to establish a multi-club activities which will benefit all the fellow collectors and enthusiastic. With this in view I request your participation for the growth and development of numismatics in Tallahassee and throughout world.

I also request you to pass on this information to your club members and encourage their participation.
We are planning to have few activities to make this show memorable and fun.

Venue: 1400 North Monroe Street, Tallahassee, FL 32303 

Date and Timings: July 28th 2012 between 9-5 P.M.

Show Details: This meet is a unique opportunity to congregate and swap materials between other Club members. This is for the first time an attempt will be made to initiate multi-club activities to promote Numismatics.

Activities:
- The setup starts from 7AM with police security
- Admission is $1.00 or free with any Coin Club Membership
- Raffle ticket will be sold & there will be hourly drawings
- ANACS grading service will be available (ANACS grading service is offering a special starting at just $9
for US coins (valued up to $500) with all other services being discounted including foreign. You can
also submit coins at the Show and save another $25-$30 on the inbound shipping)
- There will be 1 or 2 Short Presentations
- There will be exhibit displays
- Possibly a small auction will be arranged if enough items are available
- Police will be available on site during teardown 4PM - 6PM

Please let us know if you are willing to participate in Swap/Trade Meet and the number of tables you
would like to take. Space is limited and tables will be allotted on first come basis. Only few tables are
available, please hurry.
There will be about 20-30 tables (6x4 ft) with chairs available around the perimeter. The table charge
will be $25 per table and $40 for 2 tables.

Numismatics – Currency Collection

Like philately, coin/banknote collection is also considered as hobbies of rich people. There are several ways to collect coins and banknotes of the world. It all depends on what you want to collect. You can start with the coins in your pocket. At home leisurely go through the coins you have, you will be amazed with the types and varieties. You can acquire coins of the different countries through pen friends or from the relatives you know staying abroad. There are several websites where you can actually exchange your coins. It is fun collecting coins and you will really enjoy it. Like philately it will also expose you to the world history through its varied forms.

Indian Coinage

The origin of Indian coinage is still debatable. With the origin of the Indus valley civilization of Mohenjo-Daro and Harappa, which dates back to 2500 BC started the first use of legal tender system for transaction in the Indian sub-continent. Archeologists have excavated several seals from this site but it is not clear whether they were used as coins. The accounted coinage started with punch mark coins issued well before Imperial Mauryas (322–185 BCE). You can read more about the Indian coin history in the below mentioned weblinks. Greeks, romans, muslim rulers and british raj have greatly influnced Indian coins. Several metals like copper, silver, lead, gold and different alloys have been used to mint coins. Each issuing dynasty can be recoginzed with their unique symbols and motifs on the coins. With the independence in 1947, uniform coin system came into existance throughout the country.
